A Natural Wonderland

Keld is known for having one of the highest concentrations of waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Along the River Swale and nearby gills, you’ll find several stunning falls  all reachable by foot on the Keld Waterfall Walk or via connected footpaths.

1. Kisdon Force

This spectacular two-tiered waterfall is one of the stars of the show. Hidden in a wooded gorge, it’s a dramatic sight, especially after heavy rain. A must-see on any Keld visit.

2. East Gill Force

Just a short walk from the car park, this is one of the easiest falls to access – ideal for young kids or anyone looking for a shorter stroll. It’s where many people start their waterfall adventure.

3. Catrake Force

Often missed by first-timers, Catrake is a gorgeous, lesser-known waterfall close to the centre of the village. It feels secret and special.

4. Wain Wath Force

Located just outside Keld, this wide, calm waterfall has an open aspect and is visible from the road. It’s a great picnic spot and perfect for those who want to see a waterfall without a long walk.

Walking the Keld Waterfall Trail

The Keld Waterfall Walk is a lovely waterfall walk with stunning views of Swaledale, rolling hills, and traditional dry stone walls. Expect:

  • Muddy and uneven sections – especially near the falls and after rain

  • Steep paths

  • Fields, meadows, riversides, and woodlands – a great mix of terrain

We recommend proper walking boots with good grip, especially if you’re walking with children or four-legged explorers.

Shorter walks are possible too, making this spot ideal for both casual strollers and longer-distance walkers. It also links to parts of the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast Path, so it’s easy to build into a bigger Dales adventure.
