About Discover Teesdale

Discover Teesdale is part of the Outdoor Exploring Family, created by people who genuinely spend their time walking, exploring and learning about this valley. We are based in Teesdale and know it as a place shaped not just by landscape, but by history, people and quiet moments outdoors.

Outdoor Exploring Family began as a way to share how nature supports both physical health and mental wellbeing. That belief has always guided what we do. Time outdoors slows things down, clears the head and helps people reconnect with themselves. Discover Teesdale exists to share that feeling through real places you can visit, real walks you can follow and real stories rooted in the land.

Why Discover Teesdale exists

Over the years, we noticed that information about Teesdale was often fragmented. One website might focus only on walking routes, another on history, another on advertising space, often with very little depth. Teesdale has far more to offer than that.

There is no clear, independent, all-in-one guide dedicated solely to Teesdale. Discover Teesdale was created to change that. Our aim is to build a calm, reliable hub that brings together walks, waterfalls, history, geology, dark skies, villages and local places in one place, written by people who have actually been there.

This is a long-term project. We are here to document Teesdale properly and respectfully, not to chase trends or quick returns.

Real walks, explored properly

Every walk and place we share begins in the same way: with a map. We still use traditional Ordnance Survey maps to plan routes, decide what looks interesting and understand how the land fits together. Then we head out, explore on foot and take our camera with us.

We only publish routes that follow public rights of way or open access land. If a place is not accessible, we do not promote it. What you see on the website is what you can realistically expect to find when you visit, not a staged or exaggerated version.

Our photography is honest. We do not use artificial enhancements or AI tools to alter landscapes or make locations look more dramatic than they are. We also do not chase extreme conditions to make places look impressive. Teesdale does not need exaggeration. Showing places as they truly are builds trust and avoids disappointment.

A genuine approach to history

Teesdale is rich in history, from ancient routes and settlements to lead mining, industry and rural life. Each history page on Discover Teesdale is carefully researched using official records, dates and verifiable sources wherever possible.

Many hours go into understanding the background of a place before writing about it. Our aim is not to gatekeep information, but to help keep local history alive by sharing it clearly and responsibly. History belongs to everyone, and places make more sense when their stories are understood.

Supporting Teesdale, not selling it

Discover Teesdale is built to give something back to the area. In time, the site will include dedicated sections to promote independent holiday cottages, local shops and small businesses. These listings are free. There are no commissions and no listing fees.

We fund the running costs of the website through a small number of carefully chosen national affiliate links related to healthy living, heritage and the outdoors. This allows us to keep Discover Teesdale independent and ensures local businesses are never asked to pay to be featured.

Not about us, about you

Outdoor Exploring Family is not about us. It is about the people who want calmer walks, clearer heads and a deeper connection to the places they explore. If you enjoy honest guides, quiet landscapes and learning more about where you are walking, you are already part of the family.

If you are local to Teesdale or planning a visit, we hope Discover Teesdale helps you explore with confidence and curiosity. Our inbox is always open at info@outdoorexploringfamily.com
