Summerhill Force & Gibson’s Cave

Where to park

The history

Summerhill Force is a beautiful waterfall that flows over layers of limestone and sandstone, typical of the Teesdale area. But what really makes this place special is Gibson’s Cave, the shady overhang tucked behind the waterfall itself.

Legend has it that the cave gets its name from a local outlaw named William Gibson, who used it as a hideout many years ago. Thanks to the curtain of falling water, the cave was the perfect place to stay hidden from the law while still being able to keep watch. It’s easy to imagine the stories of the past as you step behind the waterfall yourself!

Today, it’s a peaceful and magical spot that offers a little slice of adventure and history on a short, easy walk – no bandits around now, just happy walkers and curious children exploring a natural wonder.
