Aira Force
Aira Force is a dramatic woodland waterfall near Ullswater, where Aira Beck drops through a rocky gorge beneath a historic stone bridge, with circular walking trails leading up toward Gowbarrow Fell.
Tucked into the Ullswater valley, Aira Force is one of those rare Lake District places that feels like a proper adventure without needing a big hike. Woodland paths, tumbling water, little bridges and peaceful streams make this an ideal family day out, whether you have half an hour or a whole afternoon.
It’s more than just a waterfall. It’s somewhere to slow down, wander, splash in shallow beck water and let the kids explore while you breathe in the trees.

Walking to the Waterfall
The classic Waterfall Trail takes around 45 minutes to an hour as a relaxed loop. You’ll follow Aira Beck through mossy woodland, cross stone bridges and climb gentle steps before reaching the main falls.
Even in dry weather the walk feels magical, with constant sound of running water and plenty of spots to pause.
If you’d like more, you can extend your walk into quieter woodland routes or climb higher toward Gowbarrow Fell for wide views across Ullswater.
What You’ll See Along the Way
Rushing waterfall views, gentle woodland streams and shaded paths winding between mossy trees. Little bridges to cross, natural play spots with logs and stepping stones, and peaceful corners where you might even spot a red squirrel if you arrive early. If you continue uphill, you’ll also be rewarded with wide views across Ullswater and the surrounding fells.
It’s one of those places where kids can be kids, dogs can sniff everything in sight, and adults can finally unclench their shoulders.
A Brilliant Lake District Family Walk
We love Aira Force because it works for everyone.
The children never get bored with the bridges, streams and woodland trails, and there’s enough space to let them explore safely. It’s also perfect for dogs (on leads), with lots of fresh air and shaded paths.
Whether you’re doing the short waterfall loop or heading higher for fell views, it always feels like a proper Lake District adventure without needing a full mountain day.
A Moment of Calm
Sit by the beck for five minutes.
Listen to the water.
Watch the trees move.
Even short walks like this can change how a day feels.
Sometimes that’s all we need.
