Escape the Crowds at Brothers Water – A Peaceful Hidden Gem in the Lake District
Brothers water
If you're looking for a quieter corner of the Lake District to unwind, Brothers Water near Hartsop is one of our all-time favourite spots. Tucked away in the heart of the eastern Lake District, this small but stunning lake is perfect for those seeking peace, scenic beauty, and a proper nature reset.

Where to park
To visit Brothers Water, head to Cow Bridge Car Park (CA11 0NZ). This small car park offers easy access to both Brothers Water and the charming village of Hartsop.
ð ŋïļ Parking is free for National Trust members, but there is a charge for non-members – so don’t forget your card if you’re a member!
From the car park, you’ll find yourself immediately immersed in nature, with quiet paths leading you to the lakeshore in minutes.
A Bit About the Area
Brothers Water sits at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass, nestled between Hartsop Dodd and High Hartsop Dodd, with Place Fell and Fairfield towering nearby. The views are simply beautiful in every direction. The village of Hartsop, with its stone cottages and rich history, adds to the charm of the area.
Fun fact: Brothers Water was once known as Broad Water, but was renamed in the 19th century after two brothers drowned in the lake – a sad story, but one that adds to the character of this quiet place.

Why We Love Brothers Water
Brothers Water is a lesser-known Lake District treasure. While many visitors head for the busy spots like Windermere or Ullswater, Brothers Water remains calm and uncrowded – perfect for families, couples, or solo explorers looking to slow down and reconnect with nature.
There are no facilities here, so it’s best to come prepared but that’s part of the charm. Just you, the water, and the sounds of the fells.
