Huel Lite Review UK: Our Huel Lite Ready to Drink Review

Huel Lite is the lighter option in Huel's Ready to Drink range, with 190 calories and 25g of plant based protein in each 500ml bottle. We've been using Huel Lite ourselves on busy days and taking it with us when we're out walking, so this page is based on how it has actually fitted into our routine rather than simply repeating the information on the bottle.
For us, Huel Lite works best when we want something quick and lighter rather than a full 400 calorie Huel drink. It is easy to throw in the car or rucksack, there is nothing to mix or prepare, and the bottles we've tried have been smooth and easy to drink.
There is one important thing to understand before buying it though. At 190 calories, we wouldn't rely on Huel Lite as our only food for a long day in the hills. We tend to think of it as a lighter option or something to have alongside other food.

What Is Huel Lite?
Huel Lite is part of Huel's Ready to Drink range, but it is quite different from buying one of the standard 400 calorie bottles. It is designed as a lighter option while still containing 25g of protein and a range of vitamins and minerals.
That difference is important when deciding whether it is right for you. If we're looking for something substantial to replace lunch, we would normally choose something with more calories. If we want something quick that doesn't feel like a full meal, Huel Lite makes much more sense.
There is also no preparation involved. That's probably one of its biggest advantages for us. You aren't carrying powder, measuring water or washing a shaker afterwards. We can simply take a bottle with us and open it when we want it.
What We Actually Think of Huel Lite
The first thing we noticed was the texture. Huel Lite is really smooth and easy to drink, which matters more than you might think with this sort of product. We've tried meal drinks before where finishing the bottle starts to feel like a chore, but we haven't found that with Huel Lite.
We also like that it doesn't feel like we're having a huge meal. There are plenty of occasions when that's exactly what we want. It might be a busy morning, a long drive somewhere, a quick stop while we're out exploring or simply one of those days when we need something easy.
That doesn't mean we think it is perfect for every situation. At 190 calories, it is deliberately much lighter than Huel's larger meal options. If we've been walking for hours and are properly hungry, a Huel Lite bottle on its own isn't what we'd choose for lunch.
That's actually one of the reasons we like it. We know what we're using it for rather than expecting one product to do everything.
Taking Huel Lite on Our Walks
We have taken Huel Lite with us on walks and it works particularly well on days when we don't want to stop and unpack a full lunch.
We normally chill a bottle before leaving home and put it in the rucksack. When we stop, there is nothing to prepare. Open it, have a drink and carry on when we're ready.
For shorter walks and days out, that convenience is excellent. On longer days, we would normally take other food as well. A bottle has 190 calories, so we don't treat it as all the food we're going to need for several hours outdoors.
We've had it alongside things like fruit and other snacks, and that suits us much better than pretending a 190 calorie drink is going to replace everything you would normally eat on a big walking day.
There is another practical point worth mentioning. Huel Lite comes ready mixed in a 500ml bottle. That is convenient, but it also means you're carrying 500ml of liquid. For a normal day walk that's hardly a problem, but if we were carrying everything for a multi day backpacking trip, we wouldn't fill the rucksack with bottles. Powdered or dehydrated food makes much more sense when weight and space really matter.
That's the sort of difference that doesn't always come across when you only look at the nutrition figures.
What We Like About Huel Lite
The main reason Huel Lite has stayed in our routine is convenience. There is genuinely nothing to prepare, which makes it easy to grab when we're leaving the house or put in the car for a day away.
We like the smooth texture, we like having 25g of protein in a lighter bottle, and we like being able to choose it on days when we don't want one of Huel's more substantial Ready to Drink meals.
It also fits our lifestyle well. We spend a lot of time travelling to walks, taking photographs, exploring places and being outside with the family. Food doesn't always need to become another thing that has to be planned in detail, and products like this give us another option.
What We Don't Like About Huel Lite
The biggest downside is also the thing that makes Huel Lite different: 190 calories isn't very much if you're genuinely hungry.
If you're expecting it to replace a substantial lunch after a long walk, you may be disappointed. For us it works much better as something light, as part of what we're eating, or for times when we simply don't want a larger meal.
A ready mixed 500ml bottle also takes up more room and weight in a rucksack than dry food. That's why we think Huel Lite makes far more sense for ordinary day walks, work, travelling and busy days than it does as the main food for a long backpacking trip.
And, like any ready made convenience product, it is going to cost more than filling a bottle at home or making your own sandwich. You're paying partly for the convenience.
None of those things stop us using it, but they are worth knowing before you order it.
Huel Lite vs Regular Huel Ready to Drink
The biggest difference for us is straightforward.
Huel Lite contains 190 calories per bottle, whereas the standard Huel Ready to Drink options are designed to be much more substantial.
We don't really see one as being better than the other because we use them for different reasons.
If we want something lighter, Huel Lite is the one that makes sense. If we're genuinely replacing a meal and want something more substantial, we'd choose one of Huel's higher calorie options instead.
That's why we'd choose based on what you actually need rather than simply buying Lite because the calorie number is lower.
Is Huel Lite Worth Buying?
For us, yes, but with an important qualification.
We think Huel Lite is worth considering if you want something quick, high in protein and lighter than a standard Huel Ready to Drink. It works particularly well for busy mornings, travelling, work and ordinary days out when convenience matters.
We wouldn't recommend buying it expecting a 190 calorie bottle to somehow become a huge hiking lunch. That's not how we use it.
What makes it useful is exactly the opposite. It fills a gap between having nothing and having a much more substantial meal, with no preparation required.
We've continued using it because that gap comes up surprisingly often in everyday life.

Huel Lite FAQ
Is Huel Lite good for hiking?
We find Huel Lite useful on day walks because there is nothing to prepare and we can simply put a bottle in the rucksack. With 190 calories and 25g of protein, we personally use it when we want something lighter or alongside other food rather than relying on it as our whole lunch on a long walk.
How many calories are in Huel Lite?
Each 500ml bottle contains 190 calories. That's one of the main differences between Huel Lite and Huel's more substantial Ready to Drink options.
How much protein is in Huel Lite?
Each bottle contains 25g of plant based protein.
Is Huel Lite a full meal?
We think this depends on what you expect from a meal. At 190 calories, it is much lighter than Huel's standard Ready to Drink products. For us it works as a light meal or alongside other food, but we wouldn't rely on one bottle as our only food for a long walking day.
Can you take Huel Lite backpacking or wild camping?
You can, but we'd make a distinction between a day walk and a multi day trip. Huel Lite is convenient because it is already mixed, but that also means carrying a 500ml bottle. We would happily take one on an ordinary walk, but if pack weight really mattered we would choose something lighter and more compact for a longer trip.
Is Huel Lite better than regular Huel for walking?
We don't think one is automatically better. Huel Lite makes sense when we want something lighter, while a more substantial Huel product makes more sense when we're hungry and want something closer to a full meal.
Does Huel Lite need any preparation?
No. That's one of the things we like most about it. It comes ready to drink, so there is nothing to mix or prepare.

Do Outdoor Exploring Family actually use Huel Lite?
Yes. This review is based on our own experience using Huel Lite rather than a product description copied from Huel. We've used it during everyday life and taken it with us on days outdoors, which is why we've included both the things we like and the situations where we think another option makes more sense.
