Low Force

If you’re searching for an easy waterfall walk in the North Pennines, Low Force Waterfall is one of our all-time favourite spots  and it’s perfect for families, nature lovers, and even quick evening strolls with the dog.

We visit Low Force often and it never fails to impress. Whether it’s the calming sound of the River Tees, the fun of crossing the wobbly swing bridge, or simply sitting with a flask watching the water flow, it’s a peaceful escape we always come back to.

Parking at Bowlees Visitor Centre

We always park at the Bowlees Visitor Centre car park (DL12 0XE)it’s donation-based pay and display, and there are clean toilets, picnic tables, and a lovely little café for a post-walk treat. This is the perfect starting point for your Low Force adventure.

🥾 The Walk to Low Force – Easy, Quick, and Beautiful

From the car park, just follow the well-marked path that leads you directly to the waterfall. It’s a short, gentle walk – just 10–15 minutesmaking it ideal for young children or when you’re short on time but still want to experience something special.

One of the most exciting parts for our little ones is the Wynch swing bridge over the River Tees completed in 1830. It’s narrow and bouncy (in a good way!) and gives you an amazing view of the river below. It’s become a must-do part of every visit!

💧 About Low Force Waterfall

Low Force is a natural waterfall on the River Tees, flowing over dramatic Whin Sill rock formations. While it’s not as tall as nearby High Force, it’s just as impressive – especially after rainfall when the water really thunders through the gorge.

We love bringing a snack and finding a spot to sit near the viewing area, where it’s safe and peaceful. It’s one of those places where you just stop and take it all in.

🐾 Perfect for Families & Dogs

  • Flat, short walk suitable for most buggies (though the swing bridge is narrow.

  • Dogs are welcome and ours loves it just as much as we do!

  • Ideal for younger children and beginner walkers looking for a short but rewarding trail.

📸 Hidden Gem Alert

Low Force is often overshadowed by its big sister, High Force, but we honestly prefer Low Force for its quiet charm, shorter walk, and relaxed vibe. It’s a bit of a gem in Teesdaleand one we’re always recommending to friends and family.
